Power has returned now what? Move quickly to document losses, protect your home from further damage, and open a clean claim file. Here are a few tips to help you recover costs and think ahead about unexpected problems like mold.
First 48 Hours: What To Do
- Safety sweep: Watch for downed lines, water leaks, gas odors; reset breakers methodically.
- Document everything: Photos/videos inside and out with timestamps. Save serial numbers.
- Food & meds triage: Follow 4-hour fridge / 48-hour full freezer rules; list spoiled items.
- Prevent more damage: Tarps, boards, dehumidifiers; keep all receipts.
- Open the claim: Get a claim number, ask about preferred contractors, and note every call.
Blackout Recovery - Quick Checklist
- Photo/video damage log (inside & out)
- List of spoiled food/meds + receipts
- Temporary repairs & mitigation receipts
